If you filed a claim in the 23andMe data breach settlement, your payment may already be on the way. The $46.75 million fund, approved by a bankruptcy court in July 2026, began distributing to class members in early October, with Venmo deposits appearing in accounts starting October 1. Only those who submitted a valid claim before the February 17, 2026 deadline qualify for a cash payment.

Background: The 2023 Data Breach

In October 2023, hackers used a technique called credential stuffing - using previously leaked usernames and passwords to access accounts - to break into 23andMe customer accounts. The company estimated that the attack exposed genetic ancestry data and other personal information belonging to approximately 6.9 million customers.

The breach proved to be an existential blow for the DNA testing company. Its stock fell sharply, lawsuits followed, and by March 2025, 23andMe had filed for bankruptcy. Later that year, a nonprofit organization led by co-founder Anne Wojcicki acquired the company's assets out of bankruptcy proceedings.

Settlement Approval

On July 7, 2026, U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Brian Walsh approved the $46.75 million settlement, calling it "fair and equitable and in the best interest of the trust." Of the total, approximately $32.5 million is allocated to class member claims. Kroll, a global settlement administration firm, is managing the distribution.

The settlement covers 23andMe customers who were active between May 1 and October 1, 2023, and who received notice that their information had been compromised.

What Payments Look Like

Class members who submitted valid claims may receive payment across three benefit tiers:

  • Statutory Cash Claim: Approximately $100 for eligible residents of Alaska, California, Illinois, and Oregon
  • Health Information Claim: Up to $165 for claimants whose health-related genetic data was exposed
  • Extraordinary Claim: Up to $10,000 for individuals who can document unreimbursed financial losses directly caused by the breach

Early reports from claimants suggest Venmo deposits of $274.89 and $619.89, though Kroll has not published official per-person rates. Actual amounts vary by claim tier and the total number of valid claims filed. Payments may arrive in batches over several weeks; no formal distribution schedule has been published.

What Happens Now

The claim deadline of February 17, 2026 and the window to correct a deficient claim (June 12, 2026) have both passed. No new claims can be filed at this time.

Eligible customers who did not file a monetary claim may still be able to enroll in a genetic monitoring service offered through the settlement using an administrator-issued notice code. For details on distribution status or to check your claim, visit Kroll's settlement portal.

Separately, California Attorney General Rob Bonta has filed a civil enforcement action against 23andMe, alleging the company ignored cybersecurity warnings and downplayed the scope of the breach. That case is ongoing and is separate from the class member payouts.
